Permission was given for Strutting (GB), Nocturnal (IRE), Mercury Day (IRE), Surveyor (GB), and Imperial Express (IRE) to all wear a red hood to the start.
Leaving the stalls, Strutting (GB), placed third, jumped left-handed carrying both Moonspirit (GB), unplaced, and Cheshire Dancer (IRE), unplaced, off their intended lines, but after viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no riding offence was involved and that it had not improved the placing of Strutting (GB).
An enquiry was held to consider interference just inside the final furlong when Mercury Day (IRE), unplaced, ridden by Jack Gilligan, interfered with Asteverdi (GB), unplaced, ridden by Tom Marquand.
The interference was found to be accidental in that Mercury Day (IRE) ducked quickly left-handed away from the whip before being immediately corrected by Gilligan, resulting in Marquand having to take a check on the weakening Asteverdi (GB).
