'£360,000 out the ring' - Star Sports reflect on 'massive' Royal Ascot Star Sports managed to record a profit over the five days of Royal Ascot. The bookmaker was notably hit by a £360,000 loss at the betting ring on Thursday, but was able to recover in the final two days. Online punters also helped bridge the gap as Star Sports bounced back from the "loss-making Royal Ascot of 2024". While overall turnover was slightly down, that was offset by a strong margin which led to profit — a welcome contrast to the loss-making Royal Ascot of 2024. “The week got off to a bright start online when Docklands landed the Queen Anne, setting an encouraging tone for the week. Thursday proved challenging, with punters getting the better of us, but we rallied well on Friday and Saturday, ultimately closing the festival ahead. Even with Sober's win in the final race — our biggest losing race of the week — we finished in front on the online side. “On course, however, it was a far tougher battle. Despite a promising start, we ended the week over six figures down. A strong Tuesday gave way to a brutal Thursday, where five well-backed favourites did the damage and took over £360,000 out of the ring. “We did claw back some ground on the final two days which brought much-needed relief. Some of the losses on course were recovered online, and that combined effort ensured we ended the week ahead overall.”
