'Monumental' - Five Rising Stars from the Irish Derby Meeting to Watch The Irish Derby took place over the weekend at the Curragh and it was Aidan O’Brien’s Lambourn who did the business in the showpiece race, while there were several other newsworthy results. There will be plenty of horses worth adding to your notebooks and we’ve picked out five that could be winning decent races in the future, including some impressive Ballydoyle juveniles and a beaten Irish Derby horse that can thrive over longer trips. Dorset finished second to stablemate Amadeus Mozart on debut in Berkshire and managed to go one better on Saturday at the Curragh. Making virtually all of the running at the Irish venue, he put them all to the sword and went on to score comfortably. City Of Troy won the same maiden two years ago and a step up in class surely beckons for this son of Wootton Bassett. Beautify Unsurprisingly, Beautify is also a Ballydoyle inmate and she produced a solid enough effort to finish third on debut back in May. She took a monumental step forward from that to win the Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes on Saturday and the sky’s the limit for her now. Lady Iman had been impressive beforehand and was the rightful favourite but she had no answer to Beautify’s powerful performance. A step up in trip will be no problem for her and the Moyglare looks like the perfect target later on in the campaign. Suzie Songs Ger Lyons is a shrewd operator and the fact that he decided to run this filly against the colts was certainly interesting. She showed a terrific attitude to get the better of O’Brien’s Flushing Meadows in the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes. Narrowly winning a Cork maiden before that, clearly she’s a very progressive filly and there should be plenty more to come from her. Whirl Whirl was a very impressive winner of the Musidora Stakes at York back in May and she ran an absolute screamer to finish second by a neck in the Oaks at Epsom. She made most of the running that day, setting a brisk pace, and showed an iron constitution to hang in there until the very end. It’s easy to make the case that she wasn’t ridden to win that day but her class and tenacity meant she wasn’t beaten far at all. Positive tactics were employed once again in the Pretty Polly Stakes and she beat Kalpana comfortably in the end. All the big middle-distance races are open to her now and she looks very special. Tennessee Stud Joseph O’Brien’s Tennesse Stud won a Group 1 in France over 1m2f as a two-year-old so it’s no surprise that he looks like a thorough stayer at three. Third in the Derby at Epsom, he finished fourth in the Irish equivalent but perhaps lacks the pace for Group 1 races over this sort of trip. He could be a future St Leger horse and the extra two furlongs or so will surely be in his favour if so. This son of Wootton Bassett wouldn’t look out of place in next year’s cup races and he’ll surely get better the further he goes.
