'Straightforward' Doncaster win for Belardo

Belardo teed himself up for some bigger targets later in the season with a no-nonsense victory in the Betway Doncaster Mile.

Winless last season, he landed the 2014 Dewhurst for Roger Varian and was subsequently bought by Godolphin.

A raft of non-runners on account of the heavy ground meant he faced only three rivals and James Doyle never looked in any trouble, guiding him to a two-and-a-quarter-length success as the 8-13 favourite.

Varian said: "It looked straightforward but I was a little worried James could get boxed in if it turned into a sprint.

"I didn't really let him down over the winter given how well he ran in the QEII (runner-up to Solow) and we've aimed at this for a long time.

"He'll go for the Sandown Mile next and he's in the Lockinge (Newbury)."
