'Legend' San Salvador claims Ballinrobe feature The versatile San Salvador registered an eighth career success in the feature at Ballinrobe, the Download The Tote App Handicap. Completing a double for Joseph O'Brien and Dylan Browne McMonagle, the nine-year-old chestnut was returned an 11/2 chance in the colours of the Annus Mirabilis Syndicate. A Grade 3 winner over fences, the 99-rated victor raced mainly in second this evening, improving to tackle the front-running Cristal Clere (10/1) on the approach to the straight. Soon on terms with that rival, he edged to the front with over a furlong to go and kept on well when ridden, ultimately coming home a length-and-three-quarters to the good. The aforementioned Cristal Clere had to settle for second under Sean Bowen, while the well-backed Shaool (13/8f from 3s) was another length-and-a-quarter away in third, coming home strongly from the back of the field. "He's an absolute legend to ride. He’s so straightforward, he jumps and travels," Browne McMonagle, who was successful aboard Kashel Spring in the second, enthused. "For a horse that stays so well he's got a good turn of foot. I knew I was always going to quicken up a little bit better than the leader did. "Once he got there he just pricked his ears so he was just doing enough but was a good winner at the line. "He's got a lot of speed for a big horse and is able to quicken off a slow run race so it suited me well when Sean kept taking back. I was happy to steady up with him. "He was a class horse coming into the race after Royal Ascot the last day and I was delighted to get another winner with him. "Joseph places him well and he's able to turn up every time, he'll have a race planned out for him." Additional reporting by Gary Carson
