A Wave Of The Sea brought plenty of back class to the Egan Stone Kilbeggan Handicap Chase and enjoyed his first victory since 2022.

He was a Grade 1 winner of the Tattersalls Ireland Spring Juvenile Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival back in 2020 and it was the same festival where he was last seen winning the Grade B Paddy Power Handicap Steeplechase three years ago.

The nine-year-old gelding hunted down long-time leader Woodstream Lad at the final fence and touched down in front. The 7/2 joint favourite (backed in from 9/2) galloped on for a decisive eight-and-a-half-length success under Mark Walsh. St Cuthbert's Cave 7/2 joint favourite, got up for second from Woodstream Lad (5/1).

Shane Broderick said: “He won well there and he’s a good horse. It’s great to get him to train. Mark was very good on him.

“You always have a chance when you have a good owner like that.”

Frank Berry, racing manager for JP McManus, added: “The few (non runners) coming out was a help as well. If we could find another little one like that, it would be great.

“The handicapper has given him a bit of a chance which was good. It was nice to see him win a race because he hasn’t won for a while.

“We’re delighted to have a winner for Shane as well.”
