Doyen Magic was nothing if not game off the front in the Bretland Construction Edenderry Handicap Chase over an extended two-and-a-half-miles in Kilbeggan.

You could see this six-year-old mare really wanted this breakthrough success with the way she raced towards the last for Tiernan Power Roche. Zolpharine looked the danger, but Doyen Magic was having none of it and hugged the rail as she stayed on stoutly on the run-in to taste victory by four and three-quarter lengths for the Curb Your Enthusiasm Syndicate over 6/4 favourite Zolpharine, while Movie King (10/1) came in third.

This was her second outing since switching to Phillip Rothwell's yard, and it was her handicap and chase debut.

The trainer said: “It’s a new syndicate to the yard. I met the guys a year ago and they are leasing the mare off me. They are a really nice bunch of people so it’s lovely to get their first winner for them.

“I saw the mare running in Wexford last year and I really liked her. I spotted her in a broodmare sale in Doncaster in January and bought her for £2,000.

“She obviously needed a fourth run in a handicap hurdle to qualify her to go chasing and she’s super at it.

“It was her first time over fences, even though she won a point-to-point. We took a chance as she had some problems in the past, but she’s only a baby mare and I’m delighted to have her.

“She can go back over hurdles now too. She definitely would appreciate an ease in the ground. The track has been looked after excellently for this evening and has been favourable for her.”
