AMERICANS TRIUMPH AGAIN

Laffit Pincay led America to victory over a European team featuring Frankie Dettori and Kieren Fallon in a challenge match at Santa Anita in California last night.

The world`s winning-most jockey defied his 54 years to win two of the four races in the series and carry the USA to its third triumph in four stagings of the event.

Victories by Dettori and Olivier Peslier had put Europe in front with one race to go but Pincay`s success in the last leg clinched a 47 points to 37 triumph for America in the annual contest.

'Next year, no one over 50 should be allowed to ride!' Dettori quipped.

Pincay, whose record tally now stands at 9,094 career winners, said: 'I really enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun and there`s a lot of enthusiasm because we want to win.

'It`s a good competition and I`m very proud that I won, because this is the very best from California and from Europe.'

Corey Nakatani, Kent Desormeaux and Victor Espinoza were the other members of the winning team, with Johnny Murtagh completing the European side.

Blueprint, formerly owned by The Queen, gained his first US win in the Grade Two San Luis Rey Handicap on the same card.

Returning from a six-month layoff, he landed the mile-and-a-half turf event by a head from Devon Deputy under Gary Stevens, with odds-on ex-Irish Ciro only fourth.

Blueprint won seven races in the royal colours in Britain when trained by Sir Michael Stoute, most notably the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket last year.
