ASMUSSEN SAYS FAREWELL TO EUROPE

European racegoers may have seen the last of jockey Cash Asmussen.

The Texan, who has ridden at the highest level in France and Britain for almost 20 years, has returned to his family`s racing and breeding operation in the United States and may have quit the saddle for good.

Asmussen will not be returning to France this year to ride for the Niarchos family, with whom he has had a retainer since 1993. Although details of the spilt are unclear, the 38-year-old has no intention of taking a riding job elsewhere.

During his time in Europe, he rode the winners of four French Derbys, two Irish Derbys and the 1991 Arc de Triomphe. He has also won the Breeders` Cup Mile, the Japan Cup and the Arlington Million as well as five French jockeys` championships.

Asmussen told the Racing Post: 'I`m not coming back to Europe and I cannot ride for the Niarchos family if I am not coming back. I have worked for 25 years and now it is time for a new chapter.

'Every season since 1979, I have won at least one Group One race so I do not think I have too much to complain about.'
