The Aidan O’Brien trained Adelaide was just beaten into second in the Grade One Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes this evening.

The son of Galileo, who finished second in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot on his last start, was sent to the front by Colm O’Donoghue as they entered the straight but he couldn't hold off the late surge of outsider Mr Speaker.

He did battle back gamely when headed but the line came in time for the surprise winner as he scored by a neck.

Toast Of New York for Jamie Osborne and Jamie Spencer could only manage sixth, while Australian raider Pornichet finished a disappointing ninth for Gai Waterhouse.
