Alfie does the business under Ruby

Alfie Sherrin left his Chepstow debut well behind as he opened his account over timber by obliging as the 5-2 favourite in the totescoop6 Handicap Hurdle.

Ruby Walsh's mount could finish only third at the Welsh track in October and has been given plenty of time by trainer Paul Nicholls to recover from niggly problems.

The imposing seven-year-old travelled sweetly throughout on his first outing for 112 days and drew clear over the final three flights to score by nearly three lengths.

Nicholls said: "He likes to keep a bit to himself so that was very pleasing.

"When he got beaten at Chepstow my horses were all wrong and I might not have done enough with him.

"He has done a lot of hard graft since and could go for the Pertemps Final."
