Alfred Tennyson back to winning ways under Sheridan Joey Sheridan rode the perfect waiting race from the front aboard the Denis Hogan trained Alfred Tennyson to win the Edward Doran's Birthday Handicap at Gowran Park. Third at Galway last time, the T&M Partnership owned gelding was sent off 13/2 to back that run up and improve two places. Soon in front under Sheridan, the four-year-old was strongly pressed early in the straight but Sheridan held enough up his sleeve to hold on for a neck win from Tokyo Treasure. Sheridan said: "I probably should have went and made it on him in Galway but I was a little bit more reserved on him because of the hill. In hindsight, I should have kicked on. I was adamant to get on to the rail today even if I had to use a bit early and then slow it up. I went a good gallop and I let him flow down past the two but that's the way to ride him. He was only waiting for something to come. He's a grand horse. "It was nice to get one on the board as well because I picked up a little bit of a holiday in Galway. It's unfortunate as it's something I'd brushed up on. I hadn't been in the stewards room for a year and a half or two years. They say they come in threes, so I've 12 days coming up. So, it was nice to get one for Denis before that. Hopefully I have a bit of luck in the Curragh on Sunday and we'll get the ball rolling when we get back."
