All Set For Border Charge

Robin Bastiman might not have the firepower of some his better-known rivals at his Wetherby base but he could well have a Royal Ascot winner on his hands.

His Borderlescott looks a standout bet in the ultra-competitive Wokingham Stakes, with a best price of 16-1 on offer with Paddy Power.

The likes of David Nicholls are sure to have multiple runners in the six-furlong cavalry charge but Bastiman's four-year-old has an appealing profile and is guaranteed a run.

This son of Compton Place has not seen too much racing for a horse of his age but his record of six wins and three places in 13 starts speaks for itself.

After winning at Hamilton as a juvenile, Borderlescott was given time to develop and put in a most eyecatching run when fifth on his seasonal bow at Nottingham last term.

He subsequently won at Haydock before disappointing when only fifth despite being well fancied back at the same track.

However, Borderlescott only improved from there onwards and wins at Redcar and Ripon were quickly followed by a really decent second to an older rival at Goodwood last September.

His surprise 20-1 win in the Coral Sprint Trophy at York last backend really marked him out as a four-year-old to follow.

After skipping clear of the field a furlong out, Borderlescott dug deep to hold the late challenge of Machinist and mark a red-letter day for Bastiman.

Starting the season on a mark of 97, compared to 70 last term, Borderlescott proved he is still on the upgrade when winning again on the Knavesmire on his seasonal bow.

The gelding made all before staying on in convincing fashion to beat the race-fit Rising Shadow by half a length.

Given that performance, there's no reason to suppose he will not be in the shake-up at Ascot, particularly as he is proven to handle all types of ground which must be an important factor given the unpredictability of the British weather.

Although on an official rating of 102 now, Borderlescott still looks to have plenty of improvement to come and he is definite value at the price given he is as short as 12-1 with Ladbrokes.

Snap it up now and sit back as Bastiman notches his biggest career win on the Royal stage.
