Applause makes mark on debut

Wave Of Applause just egded out Catalpa Sail to justify market confidence in the opening juvenile maiden at Leopardstown.

Tommy Stack 's charge was sent off even-money favourite but had to work to nab Dermot Weld's gelding late on.

Wayne Lordan got a good tune out of the Royal Applause newcomer inside the final furlong to get up in the dying strides for a head success.

"She's being going nicely at home - working well. Ideally she would want a bit further," said Fozzy Stack afterwards.

"They finished a long way in front of the third. She's a nice filly and quite a big filly.

"We could look at the Group 3 at Naas (Juvenile Sprint Stakes June 7th) or the Balanchine Stakes at the Curragh on Derby weekend."

"She's a smart filly. She wouldn't be an Ascot filly as the races there wouldn't suit her. The Queen Mary would be a bit sharp."
