Arc line-up excites Dettori

Frankie Dettori believes this year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe could be a "vintage" renewal with a handful of horses in with a chance of Longchamp glory.

A possible partner for Dettori in the Paris showpiece is last year's Derby winner Ruler Of The World. The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt, who is part-owned by Al Shaqab Racing, was steered by the Italian to a decisive victory in the Prix Foy earlier this month.

That was a first success for Ruler Of The World since his Epsom heroics and while he was well beaten in seventh in last year's Arc, Dettori feels it would be dangerous to rule him out.

Dettori said: "He's a Derby winner, he's got low mileage this year and he won well last time - I was very impressed. The Arc is a very, very difficult race and this year looks a vintage Arc. Looking at that list, you could name 10 horses to win this year - it's an unbelievable race."

John Gosden's Oaks and King George winner Taghrooda has been popular this week after pleasing in a gallop at Newmarket on Wednesday, and Dettori pointed to the weight-for-age allowance as a major plus for her.

He said: "Three-year-old fillies get 11lb from the older horses and she's a King George winner getting 11lb - that's why Treve was so spectacular last year. It's a great advantage when a filly is good and in good form to run in the Arc. They have a great record."

Dettori missed the winning ride on Treve in last year's Arc after suffering a broken ankle just days before the big race, but he will not be aboard the Al Shaqab-owned filly after trainer Criquette Head-Maarek requested that Thierry Jarnet be allowed to renew his association.

Treve suffered defeats at Longchamp and Ascot in the hands of Dettori earlier this year and was beaten into fourth in the Prix Vermeille when ridden by Jarnet earlier this month.

Dettori said: "She's not the same horse basically. She's moving poorly and she's not striding out at all. Last year she used to pick up, but I think it's becoming a bit of a mental issue now. It's the third time she's run so poorly. To try to get her back as good as last year is going to be very hard I think."

Gosden is satisfied with Taghrooda's current condition but he rates Prix Niel winner Ectot as a major threat after jockey Gregory Benoist elected to ride him rather than dual Classic winner Avenir Certain.

The Newmarket handler also has plenty of respect for Japanese challenger Just A Way, who was a brilliant winner of the Dubai Duty Free at Meydan back in March.

He said: "She (Taghrooda) is in good order, it looks like it's drying up there. She's good, good to firm, good to soft (ground), I don't want it bottomless but there's no hope of it being bottomless so Treve might not get her ground.

"I like the horse that won the Prix Niel and the fact the jockey has chosen him over a Prix de Diane winner is saying a lot.

"We know that the best horse on sheer pure form is Just A Way but does he stay the mile and a half? I thought he was sensational in Dubai when he won there.

"I thought Frankie rode a gem of a race the other day in the Prix Foy on Ruler Of The World. It looked like he'd got his interest back."
