Barshiba lands Lancashire Oaks

David Elsworth's Barshiba landed back-to-back renewals of the Bet365 Lancashire Oaks with a gritty display under Hayley Turner.

The six-year-old mare set out to make the pace after nothing else was keen to go on in the opening furlong, so she did it the hard way.

It looked like she might get swallowed up two furlongs out as Lady Jane Digby, Grace O'Malley and Les Fazzani looked dangerous, but Turner had something up her sleeve.

Sent off the 7-2 second-favourite, Barshiba was providing Britain's leading female rider with the most prestigious victory of her career in beating the fast-finishing Polly's Mark by three-quarters of a length.

"She's so tough it's unreal," said Turner.

"She just finds form at this time of year and she won it very easily last year as well.

"Despite being blind in the eye that they challenging on, she knew they were there and she just kept finding for me, she made it a real test."

The only Irish runner in the field, the Dermot Weld trained Grace O'Malley finished back in fifth with Pat Smullen aboard.
