Beeno well beaten in France

Martin Pipe`s bid to land the French Champion Hurdle ended in disappointment with Deano`s Beeno finishing last in the Grande Course de Haies d`Auteuil this afternoon.

The first prize went to Le Sauvignon, the odds-on favourite owned by Englishman David Jackson who was winning the three-mile one-furlong featuure for the second consectuive year.

France`s best hurdler made a mistake at the penultimate flight but still had enough class to see off Gilder, trained by French Derby-winning trainer Carlos Lerner by four lengths.

Bounce Back, representing Francois Doumen, was the same distance away in third.

This trio had pulled well clear of the rest turning for home with Tony McCoy on Deano`s Beeno getting only a distant view of the leaders as the talented but mercurial British raider found this Gallic assignment beyond him.

Jehan Bertran de Balanda, Le Sauvignon`s trainer, plans to keep his star at home, following the same programme as last season with the ultimate objective being a hat-trick in this contest.

He said: 'Le Sauvignon wasn`t as good today as he was in his prep which just proves what class he`s got to still go and win.'
