Beggers can't be choosers as Harveys' outsider finishes alone The final race of Kilbeggan’s 2026 season was the Clarke's Electrical Contractors, Castletown Geoghegan Beginners Chase over three miles and it produced a remarkable outcome with 66/1 outsider Begger coming home alone after his three rivals all hit the deck. Racing in rear under Ben Harvey, the Workforce gelding was left a moderate third when odds-on favourite My Great Mate fell three out and was way behind when the remaining pair, Chanceawetmorning and Moonovercloon, both came down at the last. “It was very fortuitous. He was here to compete and he’s a good jumper,” said winning trainer William Harvey. “We’ve been holding off for a bit of soft ground and today was as good as it was going to get. We needed to get another run into him since Galway. “It worked out and we’re delighted. I hate celebrating when other people have had a misfortune, but we’ll take it. “Hopefully he comes out of the race okay and then we can plan a proper winter campaign. He’s a big horse. “We have great crew involved in the GQ Syndicate. It was put together after a very good friend of mine, Graham Quinn, passed away. “A group of his friends got together and we bought this horse a few months ago, just to keep his name alive.” Additional reporting by Gary Carson
