Big Plans For Scorpion

Last year’s St Leger hero Scorpion is to spearhead a seven-strong team of older horses kept in training at Ballydoyle this season.

The son of Montjeu, who finished second to Hurricane Run in the Irish Derby before scoring at Doncaster under Frankie Dettori, is likely to be kept away from a rematch with his Curragh conqueror for as long as possible.

But trainer Aidan O’Brien said he is pleased with the progress of Scorpion, whose season could start in next month’s Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh.

“It would be great to get a run into him before we go to Epsom for the Coronation Cup or Royal Ascot,” he reported.

“He wasn’t enjoying the ground in the Arc de Triomphe when they had that cloudburst an hour before the race and he didn’t like it at Doncaster either — it was just his guts and his class that got him through.”
