Big bans handed out at Wetherby

Tony McCoy was one of nine jockeys banned after the Betfair Supports Spinal Research Handicap Hurdle at Wetherby was declared a void race.

A yellow flag, which denotes a stopped race, was waved by a course official after Ashburton Lad was pulled up on the flat along the first circuit, having broken a leg.

Most of the jockeys in the race carried on, though, with Cunning Clarets, ridden by Brian Hughes, first past the post.

The offending nine jockeys - Hughes, McCoy, Graham Lee, Danny Cook, Denis O'Regan, Alex Voy, Jonathon Bewley, Paddy Brennan and Brian Toomey - were handed 10-day bans for failing to pull up after seeing a yellow flag.

Dougie Costello's mount, Favours Brave, pulled up, the Tom Messenger-ridden Glorybe refused to race, while Campbell Gillies was on Ashburton Lad.

Those three riders escaped any punishment.

William Hill, Ladbrokes, Sky Bet, Victor Chandler, Paddy Power and Boylesports are still paying out on the winner.

Hill's are also paying out the each way on the second and third past the post, King's Counsel and Red Skipper. Additionally, they are voiding all win only bets on the second and third horses.

David Williams of Ladbrokes said: "We feel it's the right thing to do for all our customers. It's a messy situation and it'll cost us a few quid but hopefully our punters will be happy with this resolution."
