Big guns stand ground at Curragh

All the leading fancies, including the first four home in the Vodafone Derby and the supplemented pair Morshdi and Exaltation, stood their ground at today`s acceptance stage for Sunday`s Budweiser Irish Derby.

A total of 20 horses have been left in for the Classic at the Curragh, where almost 10mm of rain overnight fell to ease the going.

Aidan O`Brien`s Galileo and his immediate three Epsom victims - Golan, Tobougg and Mr Combustible -head the ante-post market.

French Derby third Grandera shares the next slot in the betting with Exaltation, supplemented at a fee of £90,000 by local trainer John Oxx.

As expected, the Michael Jarvis-trained Morshdi, successful in the Italian Derby in Rome, is the other supplementary entry at today`s noon deadline for Sunday`s £900,000 event.

The acceptors include four colts based in France, but there are some doubts surrounding how many, if any, of them will make the trip to Ireland.

Overnight thundery showers at the Curraghleft the going good in the straight and good to firm on the round course at 9am this morning, according to manager Jason Morris, with further showers forecast during the day.
