The British Horseracing Authority's whip regulations have come under fire after Colin Keane received a 14-day ban for hitting his mount Wind Lord eight times instead of the permitted six at Sandown, with racing experts calling the punishment excessive.

Keane, who recently joined Juddmonte as the retained rider, won the Listed Gala Stakes on the Andrew Balding-trained favourite on Friday, but will miss key races at Goodwood, including the Sussex Stakes aboard Field of Gold.

The Irish rider, accustomed to different whip rules in Ireland, admitted his error, saying he "forgot and he was riding to Irish rules."

Obsession With Whip Issue Criticised

On this week’s irishracing.com Irish Angle YouTube show, Johnny Ward lambasted the British fixation with whip regulations, describing it as "borderline irrelevant" and a "red herring." Ward argued that the 14-day ban was "way over the top" for what amounted to two extra strikes.

"The British racing obsession with the whip issue is completely over the top," Ward stated.

"Colin Keane is one of my favourite people in racing, and the way he's handled this is exemplary - he took full accountability rather than making excuses.”

Bookmaker Perspective on Rule Changes

The confusion extends to betting, with recent rule changes meaning jockeys can lose races retrospectively for whip breaches, creating complications for bookmakers who must pay out on the day. AK Bets' Ronan Groome noted this "causes confusion for punters more than anything else."

Despite criticism of the rules, panelists praised Keane's response, contrasting his accountability with other jockeys who typically offer "tall tales and excuses" when facing similar situations.
