Cadeaux could be Melbourne bound

Red Cadeaux could be bound for the Melbourne Cup following his excellent effort in the Irish St Leger on Saturday.

The weights for Australia's biggest race on November 1 are published tomorrow, and trainer Ed Dunlop will study them closely before deciding whether the race is a serious proposition.

The Newmarket handler has been delighted with the progress of Red Cadeaux this year, seeing him elevated from handicapper to Group Three winner.

And his performance in defeat at the top level at the Curragh topped that, as he was only beaten a length in third place behind dead-heaters Jukebox Jury and Duncan.

"It was a good run, slightly forgotten because it was a great duel to be a dead-heat, but we were only a length behind them, making up ground," said Dunlop.

"He's in the Melbourne Cup and that is under consideration. The weights come out for that race tomorrow and we will obviously learn a bit more about our fate in relation to that.

"We are very pleased with him. He's come a long way this year, from running in handicaps to be being beaten a length in a Group One. He's done really well."
