Cadeaux faces Newbury test Ed Dunlop will wait to see how Red Cadeaux performs at Newbury next month before deciding whether to have a fifth crack at the Melbourne Cup. The nine-year-old has lined up in the last four renewals of the Flemington feature, finishing second in 2011, 2013 and 2014, while he was only eighth in 2012. His regular attendance in Melbourne has made him a favourite with Australian racegoers and the Cadeaux Genereux gelding has a barn named in his honour at the Werribee International Horse Centre, which serves as the quarantine base for international Spring Carnival contenders. Last seen when finishing last of seven in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, Red Cadeaux is now enjoying a mid-season holiday before what could be a crucial run in the Betfred TV Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury on August 15. Dunlop said: "He's having a break in preparation for the Geoffrey Freer and how he does there will tell us if he goes back to Melbourne again. "The ground was too firm for him at Ascot, we said to James Doyle if he doesn't want to do it there is no point beating him up at his age to finish sixth. "He is very fresh and still looks like he has got all his old enthusiasm."
