Cailin Deas gets up late to win Kilbeggan nightcap The James Andrew Fahey trained Cailin Deas stayed on well close home to register a first career success when taking the concluding John Thomas McNamara Series INH Flat Race at Kilbeggan. A vastly experienced seven-year-old, making her 10th start in a bumper, the Frank Reynolds owned mare was never too far off the pace under Stephen Connor. Pushed along to go third entering the straight, Cailin Deas soon went second as Sellerna Bay took over from leader Red Oak. Producing a telling burst of speed inside the last 50 yards, the eventual winner quickened up smartly to score by one-and-a-quarter lengths. Red Oak rallied well for second, with Sellerna Bay back in third. “I’m delighted that she got the job done. It was important because Frank breeds out of them,” said Fahey. “She has run a lot in bumpers but when you go down through it, the saddle slipped one day in Galway, she obviously fell in Ballinrobe and I didn’t have her fit enough in Sligo. “It’s job done. She had good form and she deserved to get one but that doesn’t really entitle her to get one. I’m delighted to get her over the line. “She’ll more than likely go over hurdles now. It’s a bit of a delayed start to her hurdling campaign but we got there in the end thank-God.” Additional reporting by Gary Carson.
