Having finished runner-up at Tipperary last time, the Matthew Smith-trained Cala Bonita went one place better when winning the Follow Us On Instagram Apprentice Handicap at Gowran Park.

Jockey Robert Whearty soon had the daughter of Inns Of Court up with the pace, sitting third as Breath Of You chased leader Clever And Classy

The latter kicked clear under Gabriella Hill early in the straight, looking home for all money as she came stands side.

However, Whearty stuck with the main group on the far side, drawing closer at the furlong pole before leading inside the last 100 yards to gain a cosy one-length win.

Matthew Smith said: “I was delighted with her in Tipperary and was hoping for a good run today.

“I wasn’t sure how she would be suited by dropping back to a mile and better ground but thought she would be alright on it.

“He said she wouldn’t mind a bit of ease in the ground, but she got away with it there. He said she’d probably get a mile and a quarter as well.”
