Canford set for racecourse gallop

Canford Cliffs is to wind up his preparation for a crack at the mighty Goldikova at Royal Ascot with a racecourse gallop on Thursday.

Trainer Richard Hannon plans to take his crack four-year-old colt to either Kempton or Newbury ahead of his eagerly-awaited clash with the French-trained mare.

The pair are on course to meet for the first time in the race that opens the five-day feast, the Queen Anne Stakes, in which Canford Cliffs will be aiming to take revenge on Goldikova for her defeat of his stablemate Paco Boy 12 months ago.

"He will probably go and do a piece of work on Thursday, either at Newbury or Kempton, it just depends on the ground," said Hannon.

"We're taking on a bit of a legend in Goldikova, but we've got to run somewhere and hopefully it will be a great race."

Canford Cliffs, who made a successful debut in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, has overtaken Goldikova as the 11-10 favourite for the Group One feature over the straight mile.
