Cannes got off the mark at the third attempt when landing odds of 4/5 for the in-form combination of Joseph O’Brien and Dylan Browne McMonagle in the Captain Dara Fitzpatrick Memorial Maiden at Leopardstown.

The son of Sea The Stars filled the runner-up berth on both his previous outings and appreciated the step up to a 1m4f here leading early in the straight.

He kept on well inside the final furlong for a comfortable two and a quarter lengths verdict over Almazann with Count Bezukhov a stablemate of the winner, catching the eye on debut finishing well into third.

O’Brien said, “He’s a nicely bred horse and he’s had two nice runs building towards today.

“He won really nicely today and hopefully the best is yet to come.

“I’d say he might go into a nice three-year-old handicap somewhere.”
