Sam Sangster has more success after his well-publicised purchase of subsequent Group 1 winner Diego Velasquez. This time in partnership with Lee Warren, his Cap Saint Martin (8/1) stayed on to grasp the TRM Staysound Cooling Clay Handicap for trainer Joseph O’Brien and jockey Wayne Hassett.

The son of Persian king was slowly into stride and therefore settled towards the rear of the six-runner field. He was pushed along three-furlongs out and made headway into a challenging position over two-furlongs out.

Still with two lengths to find approaching the final furlong, the bay gelding stayed on strongly close home, along with the weight concession of the second which aided the winner’s cause.

Joseph O’Brien was represented by Kevin Blake who said, “He won a Curragh maiden and looked promising. He disappointed a bit at Leopardstown last time and was gelded and given a bit of time. He’s big and scopey.

“I thought Wayne gave him a particularly good ride. He followed the favourite, who seemed to be really well fancied, and was slow to go to his stick.

“He pulled off his near fore shoe and Wayne thinks it happened early.

“He looked like he was going to be progressive last year so maybe gelding crowned him.”
