Check This Out beats favourite in Roscommon opener The Noel Meade trained Check This Out went one place better than on his debut when staying on strongly to upset odds-on market leader Sound Bite in the opening Irish EBF Auction Series Maiden at Roscommon. Runner-up over course and distance in May, the Colin Keane partnered son of Ten Sovereigns took another step forward here to run out a gutsy winner. Sent off 15/2, the colt tracked the early pace favourite Sound Bite led Gas Works Wall. With the latter coming under pressure two-furlongs from home, Keane moved through to challenge the leader. Sound Bite found plenty when asked for more by rider Gary Carroll but Keane refused to go away on Check This Out, The pair flashed by the post together but the latter did just enough to win by a neck. “That man is worth his weight in gold and it’s great to have him,” said Meade. “He’s a nice little horse in fairness. The last day he ran here he didn’t have a clue what was going on, he was slow out of the gate and was slow picking up. “He actually travelled really well today and he said when he got there he didn’t really know what he was doing either. “He should improve a little bit, I hope, and he’s still growing. “It’s nice to win for that man because he sent me three two-year-olds. The lad that was third at the Curragh on Friday (Bobby McGee), this fella and he has another nice horse by Mehmas. He also owns two four-year-olds with me.” Additional reporting by Gary Carson.
