Chou Chou (4/1) won a battle with the fancied Warazam for the first prize in the St Patrick's Well Handicap at Clonmel and brought up a treble for jockey Shane Foley.

Warazam was bidding to make the breakthrough at the 11th time of asking and the market firmly believed today would be the day as she went off 5/4 favourite.

Chou Chou improved to join Warazam two furlongs down with Pink Socks just in behind the pair.

The front two soon disputed the lead and it was back and forth all the way, but in the final 150 yards Chou Chou held a narrow advantage and he was driven out by Foley to increase the margin to three-quarters of a length at the line. Pink Socks couldn't get on terms with the leaders and had to settle for third at 14/1.

Eamonn O'Connell said: "He was in good form and we were hopeful but, with the rain that fell, we didn't know how he'd handle it. We had been looking for soft ground all along, but he has been running well on good to firm.

"It is grand for the boys as we only claimed him for €4,000 and he has won twice now. He is fine and will run away.

"The syndicate is run by Declan Beary from Oola, it involves my father and there are 10 involved. They're having great fun."

Foley was also victorious on So Golden and Iron Fist
