Chriselliam springs a surprise in the Shadwell Richard Hughes added a rare long-odds win to his Group One roll of honour when partnering 28/1 chance Chriselliam to a shock success in the Shadwell Fillies' Mile. Trained by Charlie Hills, the winner was held up in the early stages off fairly ordinary fractions but made rapid gains down the outside of the pack from the two-furlong pole. Favourite Rizeena, who was also ridden off the pace in the early stages, struck the front a furlong out as the gutsy Paul Deegan trained, Chris Hayes ridden Avenue Gabriel finally gave way, but the winner pounced soon after to register a one-length success. Ihtimal finished a never-dangerous third, a further two lengths in arrears. "I'm over the moon," the successful trainer told Racing UK. "She's got great cruising speed, a great stride and Richard said he could feel her just filling up from halfway. "When she was beaten at Haydock last time, Gerald Mosse rode her and he said he'd got there much too soon because he hadn't expected her to quicken up so immediately. "We might look at America and the Breeders' Cup for her now, but otherwise she will be prepared for next year's Classics." Carson, who watched the race from the paddock and performed a remarkable victory jig as she passed the post in front, said: "It wasn't a surprise. She's a filly that Charlie has always felt was a good filly and while she's never worked with (Royal Ascot winner) Kiyoshi, he has always said she's as good as her. "She went to Deauville and we were so disappointed, we didn't know what happened there. "Hughesie did a great job today - he slightly disobeyed orders and was further back than I told him and obviously I'll give him a pat on the back for that!" Hughes had been on board Chief Barker when denying Chriselliam at Haydock last time and admitted: "I knew she had a sneaky chance, because I beat her last time and I got a little bit lucky. "It was a little bit stop-start and it took me a little while to get cover the first few hundred yards but once I got the cover I got a great rhythm on her and I knew I was going to win from halfway. "She came down the hill really good, which is a huge plus for next May." Clive Brittain did not make any excuses for the runner-up Rizeena, who narrowly failed to claim further Group One glory. He said: "She was beaten by a better horse on the day. Maybe a bit of ease in the ground would help, but it hasn't made the difference (between winning and losing). "We've come through and won the race, but then the other one has come past." Ihtimal's trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: "She got beaten by better fillies today. There's no plans for her and we'll keep our options open with her. We'll look for races over seven furlongs and a mile."
