Willie Mullins continued his great recent record in the featured €45,000 Grade 2 Red Mills Chase at Gowran but not with the one that most expected as Classic Getaway upset stablemate Saint Sam

Saint Sam easily won this 2m4f event 12 months ago and Paul Townend again adopted front-running tactics in this three-runner affair.

However, the 2/5 favourite was pressed by both his rivals early in the straight with Classic Getaway jumping to the front two out.

The Danny Mullins-ridden 9/2 chance soon asserted and kept on strongly on the run-in to beat Saint Sam by six lengths, with Journey With Me fading a further 13 lengths back in third.

Mullins said, "“It was a good performance, he has been improving all season.

“Danny was very keen to stress that the three fences in the straight made a big difference to him because his jumping brought him into the race without any effort and then he had that final kick to go and win the race.

“It was nice for Cheveley Park to have a Red Mills winner.”

When it was put to him that he had run well last time at Thurles he added, “He did, on very good ground, and the different ground here was a help to him.

“I’m not sure where we’re going to go with him next. We’ll have a review of where he might go next, no plans yet.”
