Classy line-up for Goodwood group three

A competitive line-up of 10 runners has been declared for the Theo Fennell Lennox Stakes at Goodwood tomorrow.

Ed Dunlop`s Surprise Encounter has been switched from today`s William Hill Mile to this seven-furlong Group Three contest.

But the Royal Hunt Cup winner will have his work cut out to cope with the likes of Sagitta 2000 Guineas runner-up Tamburlaine and Aidan O`Brien`s Mull Of Kintyre.

Tamburlaine`s trainer Richard Hannon also runs Criterion Stakes second Reel Buddy.

Lambourn trainer Brian Meehan drops Craven Stakes winner King`s Ironbridge back in trip tomorrow, the colt having finished unplaced in the 2000 Guineas on his last visit to the track.

Explaining King`s Ironbridge`s absence from the course, Meehan said: 'He was busy in the spring - he won the Craven and then ran in the Guineas.

'He had a little break after the Guineas and has freshened up well.

'There wasn`t a whole lot coming up and Ascot was going to be too soon.'

Meehan believes tomorrow`s shorter distance will not present any problems and he added: 'I think the trip will suit him. He just ran a bit free in the Guineas.

'Just take him back to seven, give him a chance to settle in and then step him back up to a mile.'

If all goes well with King`s Ironbridge at Goodwood then he could soon be going on his travels.

'He`s in the Secretariat Stakes (Arlington on August 18th) and Prix Jacques le Marois (Deauville on August 19) and just about everything else.'

Other interesting runners on tomorrow`s race are Greenham Stakes victor Munir and Fath, both owned by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum.

Retained jockey Richard Hills has chosen Munir. However, the Barry Hills-trained colt will only be allowed to take his chance if there is overnight rain.

Thirsk trainer David Nicholls is responsible for six of the 19 runners in the Stewards` Sprint Handicap - the consolation race for horses eliminated from Saturday`s Vodafone Stewards` Cup.

The six include Zuhair - a winner here on Wednesday - and Flak Jacket both successful respectively in the last two runnings of the six-furlong dash.
