Edith Cowan was produced with a well-timed run in the mile maiden as Fran Berry recorded a double on the card at Cork.

Charles O'Brien 's charge, carrying his mother's colours, quickened well when asked for an effort over a furlong out.

The Galileo filly got to the lead in the final 150 yards and kept on strongly in the closing stages to post a two-and-a-half length success. Jumbo Prado who had helped to cut out the running, stuck on to claim the runner-up spot.

4/7 favourite Firethorn proved a major disppointment as he failed to pick up in the straight and could only keep on one paced for fourth. It was later revealed he had spread a plate.

The 6/1 winner had finished mid-division on two runs at Dundalk last December and was showing significant improvement today.

"Charles said she was in good form, working well, and if she handled the ground she would run well," revealed Berry afterwards.

"Despite being a bit green she won well and it was important to get a winning bracket for her."

Ricky Doyle, rider of last placed Naughty was hit with a seven-day ban for trying to weigh out without a back protector.

Doyle said that he had forgotten to put it on after coming out of the sauna. As well as the ban the young apprentice was told to consult with the Turf Club medical officer regarding his diet and correct weight management.
