Gavin Cromwell and Gary Carroll, fresh off winning the Chesham at Royal Ascot on Saturday, doubled up at Ballinrobe with Vera Verto

Cromwell also took the opening apprentice claimer on the card with Bedelia while Carroll was successful on Mick Mulvany's Fratas in race three.

Vera Verto, 3/1 favourite, tussled at the front with Female Soldier in the final three furlongs of this extended 1m4f handicap for three-year-olds plus rated 60-90.

Vera Verto hugged the inner and went on in the final quarter of a mile. She increased her lead off the home bend and that kick won the race for her as she hit the line a length and a-half clear of her stablemate Pachmena (5/1). Marvelosa (10/3) was pipped for second by a nose.

Cromwell said: “I always thought she wanted softer ground than that, but that is probably ideal for her on the easy side of good. Gary gave her a lovely ride.

“We will probably keep her on the Flat for the moment and might have a look to see if there is something for her in Galway.

“We gave her a couple of runs over fences, but she jumps a bit too careful.”
