The John Murphy-trained Celtic Crown found more close home to get up and land the spoils in the Paddy Smyth Memorial Apprentice Handicap at Ballinrobe. Bestrella hit the front two-and-a-half furlongs from home but was soon pressed by Celtic Crown.

Joey Sheridan got a good tune out of the later in the closing stages and she stuck her head out near the line to record a half-length victory.

The 11/4 winner had chased home Haparanda at Killarney five days ago.

“She’s a nice filly but still very green,” said Sheridan.

“Robbie (Colgan) rode her in Killarney and I’m very thankful to Mr Murphy for the opportunity on her.

“I think there’s plenty of improvement to come from her.”
