Trainer Andrew McNamara, a popular figure in Irish racing, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday morning. He was 76 and had been suffering from ill health in recent times.

Qualified as a vet and from Croom, Co Limerick, McNamara took out a trainers' license in 1975 and enjoyed success with Boreen Prince which won the 1985 Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham festival.

A leading horse of his era, Boreen Prince finished second in the 1983 Champion Hurdle, the same year McNamara's Yer Man was third in the Aintree Grand National.

Multiple winners Another Row and Rent A Row were other high profile horses from the 1980s while McNamara also won two Irish Lincolns, the latest coming with Drombeg Dawn in 2011 and the 1994 Kerry National with Desert Lord.

A much loved character and regular race-goer in Munster, McNamara is survived by his wife Kathleen, sons and former jockeys Andrew and Robbie McNamara and daughter Liz.

May he rest in peace.
