Denman honoured by Newbury In an initiative developed by Newbury in association with Betfair, Denman will have a race named after him at the Berkshire track. The race that was formerly known as the AON - which Denman won twice - will now be run under the title of the Betfair Denman Chase. Denman won six races in total at Newbury, with two novice chases supplementing his two famous successes in the Hennessy Gold Cup. Paul Nicholls announced the news on his exclusive column at www.betfair.com/paulnicholls and spoke of his delight at the honour: "It was a great shame that he picked up his injury when he did, but he has retired with his head held high and, while 2008 at Cheltenham was his premier day in my opinion, we will always be proud of his Newbury exploits and I know his Hennessy wins are many people's favourite performances of his. "Which is why the Betfair Denman Chase on February 11th is such a fitting tribute to the great horse." Nicholls revealed that it's intended for Denman to parade before 'his' race on February 11th where racegoers and fans alike will be able to admire the now-retired equine star who is fit and well. "He is 100% sound and a similar injury would simply have seen a younger horse out for the season, instead of retired. "But Denman is currently enduring a month of box rest, although we lead him out for a pick of grass each day. "Luckily for those who look after him, he calms down a lot when he is not in full work, as he is at his most aggressive when fit. So hopefully he will behave himself on the day" said the Champion Trainer.
