Derby win 'smashed' bookmakers Frankie Dettori dealt another hammer blow to the bookmaking industry after clinching his second Investec Derby success aboard red-hot favourite Golden Horn. The layers were left toasting a huge result on Friday after 50-1 shot Qualify caused a major shock in the Oaks, but punters had the last laugh as John Gosden-trained 13-8 favourite Golden Horn streaked clear to win the world's most famous Flat race in brilliant style. Dettori is no stranger to bookie bashings, of course, with his famous 'Magnificent Seven' at Ascot in 1996 widely regarded as the worst day in bookmaking history. The popular Italian's success aboard 5-4 favourite Authorized in the 2007 Derby was another massive success for punters. William Hill's Jon Ivan-Duke summed up the mood among the bookmaking fraternity. He said: "Frankie has single-handedly smashed the bookies for millions of pounds. The public love Frankie and we'll be counting the cost of Dettori's Derby for some time. "Frankie Dettori really is the bane of bookmakers." The fact the winner's stable companion and second-favourite Jack Hobbs filled the runner-up spot only worsened the result, according to Ladbrokes' David Williams. He said: "Frankie punished us in 2007 when Authorized won and it was every bit as a bad a Derby Day result this year with the second favourite chasing home the winner. "Golden Horn only entered the ante-post picture relatively late so little damage was done there, but we're clutching at straws. It was a tough day." Paddy Power said: "Frankie is the only jockey the whole world and his dog knows and his win means the bookies have done their absolute conkers with a payout in the tens of millions."
