Dettori has bookmakers on the run

The man who once came close to bringing the bookmaking industry to its knees has the layers running scared again as Frankie Dettori bids for a second Investec Derby on Golden Horn.

Back in 1996 the Italian went through the card at Ascot, forcing some firms to call it a day, and while any losses incurred at Epsom will pale into insignificance, it could still be a costly win.

The John Gosden-trained Golden Horn certainly has top-class credentials as the only unbeaten runner in the race and an impressive winner of traditionally the strongest trial, the Dante Stakes at York.

A general 6-4 chance, Dettori will be hoping everything goes as smoothly as his only other win in the blue riband Classic on Peter Chapple-Hyam's Authorized in 2007.

"Authorized was sent off 5-4 favourite when giving Frankie Dettori his long-awaited first Investec Derby win eight years ago, and although his status as the punters' favourite has dipped in recent years, his presence on board this year's market leader will see him return to centre stage," said Coral's David Stevens.

"Golden Horn will be the first name on thousands of betting slips, and another Derby victory for the Italian star in what is by far the highest turnover race of the Flat season will see the bookies paying out millions."

William Hill lost £8million due to the 'Magnificent Seven' and fear another Dettori bashing on the Downs.

"Frankie is the one jockey who everyone knows, as we have found out to our peril," said William Hill spokesman Jon Ivan-Duke.

"The Derby is the biggest Flat race of the year and if Frankie guides the favourite home, the industry will be paying out tens of millions."

As well as being Derby day, it is also the climax of the 20014-15 football season, with the Champions League Final in Berlin involving Barcelona and Juventus.

Ladbrokes are reporting interest in a special double of Dettori to win the Derby and Lionel Messi, arguably the best player in the world, to score, which pays 5-1.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: "The action at Epsom and in Berlin looks set to trigger the biggest betting bonanza of the summer to date. The public love Dettori and Messi in equal measure so if both mini-maestros do the business in style we'll be hit for millions."
