John The Diva stuck his neck out gamely to get the better of Smackwater Jack in a thrilling finish to the Boylesports Handicap Hurdle at Gowran Park.

The pair came to challenge, along with Roc My Haarth at the third last and it boiled down to a duel from the final flight, where both were slightly untidy.

John The Diva had the narrow advantage there and held that to the line as the 6/1 shot repelled his rival by a neck to score under Phillip Enright, for trainer Mark Cahill.

Cahill said:- “He’s a grand horse and loves heavy ground. He’s 12lb higher over fences so we came back over hurdles.

“We had him in at Thurles on Thursday, but we thought the ground was too good.

“My brother Paul owns him along with a group of lads.”
