Dublin Racing Festival Sunday Preview

Leopardstown hosts the second day of the Dublin Racing Festival on Sunday and we have another seven races to enjoy. It should be a cracking day and there are several big names on show.

Four of the seven events will be Grade 1s and Willie Mullins will have a strong hand to play once again, although he might not have it all his own way.

Our expert has gone through the card in detail and picked out their two strongest fancies.

Marine can battle through the conditions to victory

There's €150,000 on offer for the Grade 1 Dublin Chase and a small but select field of six has been declared. Willie Mullins' Majborough heads the market, but his jumping has let him down too many times before. MARINE NATIONALE is the one to beat, and for a very good reason.

Barry Connell 's nine-year-old progressed throughout the season last year, which is no surprise, as he was still learning his craft over fences. Bouncing right back to his very best in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham in March, he blew the opposition away and was utterly dominant.

Always in touch with the leaders, he went second with three fences to go and drew alongside Quilixios at the last. That rival fell, but it seems likely that Marine Nationale would have powered past him on the run-in anyway, and the ultra-consistent Jonbon was 18 lengths adrift in second.

The son of French Navy confirmed his position as the best in the division when following up at Punchestown after that. This horse is always impressive from the last fence to the line and that's a very useful weapon to have in your armoury.

The ground conditions won't be ideal for him as he prefers better ground, but he should be good enough to defy the conditions, and this two-time Cheltenham Festival winner should prove hard to beat.

Lossiemouth is the one to beat once again

The Champion Hurdle has taken a few knocks this year and that has left the door wide open for Willie Mullins' star mare LOSSIEMOUTH and it's surely now or never with that in mind. She could still go for a third Mares' Hurdle, but the seven-year-old is lining up here either way.

It appears that she is more effective over further but is still a bona fide Grade 1 performer over the minimum trip. One of the best horses in training, she is unbeaten so far this season, with both victories coming over two miles.

She got the campaign underway with an impressive victory in the Morgiana Hurdle at Punchestown. Many of the yard's horses needed their first runs badly, but that wasn't the case with Lossiemouth Mullins' mare made all the running that day and pulled clear without breaking a sweat.

It was a much tougher test up against Brighterdaysahead, who is in opposition once again here, over course and distance last time out, but she passed the examination, coming out on top by a length. Lossiemouth should confirm the form here and no one will be able to stop her at Cheltenham if she does.
