ENGLISH TRAINER JAILED FOR FATAL CAR CRASH

English flat racing trainer Jeff Pearce was sentenced to four years in prison today after admitting causing the death of a stable girl in a road accident.

The 53-year-old, who trained a career best 43 winners in 1998 and was a former jumps jockey, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Judge Jonathan Haworth, passing sentence at Cambridge Crown Court, told Pearce that he had driven in a manner which was 'courting disaster' and had been 'unforgivably irresponsible'.

Catherine Marr, 30, was declared dead at the scene of the crash near Newmarket in May of last year.

Pearce, who is married with two children, was a jumps jockey from 1966 till he was forced to retire in 1982 because of a neck injury.
