El Fontenaro seals Cork double for Derby hero Derby hero Ronan Whelan sealed a Cork double and completed the feat for his previous Royal Ascot-winning trainer Jarlath Fahey, on El Fontenaro (100/30 fav) in the Jim Ryan Racecourse Services Handicap. Whelan, whose initial big-race breakthrough came on neighbour Fahey’s Jennies Jewel in the 2016 Ascot Stakes Handicap, steered Christmas Day to win the English classic in June and, earlier today, scored on the Johnny Feane-trained Finika. Riding maiden El Fontenaro in the 19-runner 0-60 contest, Whelan had mount his mount prominent throughout and guided her to a neck victory over Rosato . Fahey reported “She has always threatened to win a race and has finally got it. This is great as getting a winning bracket for a mare is all important and she has been running a bit better this year, and is in a positive frame of mind. “She initially struggled with her (higher) rating but hopefully she’ll get confidence from this. The lads (Park Hill Racing) have been lucky owners and anything they get involved in seems to do a job. They get great pleasure from it and hopefully we’ll find something similar again next.” El Fontenaro translates from Spanish to ‘a male plumber’.
