Encke sustains fatal injury The 2012 Ladbrokes St Leger winner Encke has died following a leg injury this morning. Godolphin.com stated: Trainer Charlie Appleby reported on the morning of Tuesday, October 14 the sad loss of Encke, winner of Britain's final Classic in 2012, the Ladbrokes St Leger. The five-year-old horse sustained a hind limb injury during routine exercise and unfortunately, following complications, could not be saved. Charlie Appleby commented: "His Highness Sheikh Mohammed is deeply saddened at the loss of his Classic winner. "Encke was a talented racehorse and will be sorely missed as he was one of the yard's favourites." Encke will always be remembered as the horse that thwarted Camelot's Triple Crown bid. He was never out of the first three places in his nine-race career including when finishing in the frame in this year's Palmerstown House Estate Irish St Leger at the Curragh last month behind Brown Panther and Leading Light.
