Engines On gained a second win since joining trainer John Andrew Kinsella when staying on strongly close home to take the Schweppes Trophy Handicap at the Curragh.

Engines On’s Strong Finish in the Handicap

A winner on his stable debut at Naas in July, the Sioux Nation gelding ran a huge race at this track last month when third in the Irish Cambridgeshire.

Racing from 6lb out of the handicap on that occasion, his stamina limitations were also stretched at that mile trip.

Back in distance here and, racing from his correct mark, the five-year-old was always to the fore under Chris Hayes before coming through to head Genuine Article a furlong out.

Strongly pressed by Tokenomics inside the last 150 yards, Engines On found more close home to prevail by three-quarters-of-a-length.

Trainer’s Insights on the Victory

“He had a great run in the Cambridgeshire,” said Kinsella.

“He won on his debut for us in Naas, over seven. We said we’d have a go at the Cambridgeshire, the ground probably wasn’t soft enough for him. He wants a dig in the ground.

“We ran him in Roscommon before the Cambridgeshire and he didn’t go at all on the ground, he was well beat that day.

“He came out of it grand though and everything was good. It was a good run in the Cambridgeshire and this was the plan since then.

“He’ll probably be put away now and we won’t make any plans just yet.”
