Epsom Icon lived up to her name when running out a decisive winner of the Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom.

Victorious on her only previous visit to the Surrey circuit last summer, Mick Channon's filly was an 8-1 shot in a market dominated by French challenger and 1-2 favourite Sayana.

Having been outclassed in the 1000 Guineas before finishing fifth in a Newbury Listed event, Epsom Icon was settled in midfield for much of the extended one-mile journey, while Sayana was dropped out last by Christophe Soumillon.

As the pacemaking Loaves And Fishes began to falter passing the two-furlong marker, Epsom Icon engaged in a battle for the lead with Merry Me, but soon saw her off.

Sayana started to make ground, but began to hang when coming under pressure, seemingly struggling on the cambered track.

Epsom Icon, on the other hand, stayed straight and true and beat the odds-on shot by three and a half lengths.

Winning jockey Silvestre de Sousa said: "We went a decent gallop, but she's tough and everything went well.

"She's won on the course before, so we knew it would be no problem coming down the hill.

"She can progress a bit more."
