Euphrasia fifth in French Group One Euphrasia ran a gallant race to finish fifth when stepped up to Group One company for the Darley Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville. Trained by Joe Murphy in Co Tipperary, the five-year-old put up a career-best show when a close third to Noble Mission and Magician in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on her last start in May. Gary Carroll set out to make all at a steady pace this time and Euphrasia kept on stoutly once she had been passed in the straight and was only kept out of fourth by a nose, in a race won in impressive fashion by James Fanshawe's raider Ribbons. Frankie Dettori took his time aboard the 11-1 shot and she had just a couple of rivals behind her rounding the home turn, but once switched wide of the field, Ribbons engaged overdrive and swiftly made up the ground to run to the lead in the final furlong. Dettori, completing a Group One double on the afternoon having earlier guided John Quinn's The Wow Signal to victory in the Prix Morny, only had to push his mount out with hands and heels in the closing stages to record a most impressive victory for the Elite Racing Club. Elite racing manager Dan Downie said: "It was a big ask, but we have always liked her and we're absolutely thrilled. "James has crept along with her and given her time. She hasn't run since May as we've been very keen to keep her away from quick ground. She's been entered in a few races and then been taken out at the last minute because of the ground, so it's been frustrating, but the end result is a day like today. "She's a filly who has kept improving and hopefully there is more to come. We haven't made any plans for her yet. She's entered in the Group One on Champions Day (British Champions Fillies And Mares Stakes), but we'll see. The ground is absolutely crucial for her."
