Ex-Irish Pagan in Sedgefield shocker

He may have been a mere 5/1 chance when he landed his bumper at Downpatrick in August 2009 under Katie Walsh for John McConnell but there wasn't a huge amount of faith in Pagan Lightning today for the Weatherbys Printing Novices' Handicap Hurdle at Sedgefield.

Despite being put in as a 14/1 chance in the Racing Post, the American bred son of Street Cry opened on track at 80/1 before being cut into 50s – a price he defied under Emma Sayer.

She is the daughter of owner/trainer Dianne and she was partnering her fourth winner here. Pagan Lightning took advantage of the poor hurdling in the latter stages by King's Chorister.

Pagan Lightning, who went through the ring for as much as 60,000 guineas as a yearling, was sold for just £1,800 to his current owner/trainer at Doncaster last August.
